Israeli Cleantech UK Convention

London, October 20-22, 2009

Background

The wave of Israeli CleanTech industry comes after two similar waves of Israeli science-based industries:

  • The high technology boom of the 1990s that was built upon the world rapidly growing need in telecommunication and semiconductor technologies, upon strong defence industries, upon high quality Israeli IT engineers and upon the massive immigration from the previous Soviet Union.
  • The life sciences boom, that started in the late 90s and continues into the present, is based upon the permanent need in life saving and life improving technologies, upon significant scientific achievements at the Israeli Universities and Research Centers, upon the venture capital infrastructure created during the high technology boom and upon the reputation of Israeli innovation that draws investors and multinationals to look for new interesting companies in Israel.

The advent of Israeli CleanTech industry may be seen as the third layer of Israeli science based industry. As in the first two waves the CleanTech Industry primary drive is the growing need in CleanTech technologies that develops as the understanding prevails that environmental problems become one of the major dangers to further human progress.

In parallel to the need there is the ability. The CleanTech industry builds upon the infrastructure, the reputation and the experience of its predecessors. A an excellent example is the case of  Waterfront, that was initiated by two leading veterans of the high technology industry: Dr. Kalman Kaufmann and Mr. Dan Vilensky.

But probably the most important factor is Israel's experience in solving major water problems. As a small country with major water problem Israel has accumulated extensive know-how and experience in solving these problems.
